The turnbuckle is used frequently to tighten shafts and cables in many applications. Essentially a long nut, allowing two threaded parts to come in on either sides. The threads are cut such that turning the nut brings the two threaded parts closer or further apart.A turnbuckle is also known as a bottlescrew and is used on ships for tensioning rigging
Turnbuckles should be inspected before use to ensure that:
1) all markings are legible
2) the threads of the pin and the body are undamaged
3) the body and the pin are not distorted or unduly worn
4) never modify, repair or reshap a turnbuckle by heating as this will affect the working load limit.
