A shortening hook is used to make adjustments (if necessary )to the length of the sling chains to provide stability when lifting loads

. Unutilised hooks can inadvertently lift the load causing it to roll or drop. This is particularly hazardous where the beam or load is in an elevated position and serious injury or death can result.

1.Before working on or rolling a steel beam,a risk assessment of the work procedure and lifting equipment must be carried out to eliminate or reduce risks. All operators must be advised of the potential hazards.

2.Do not use shortening hooks if an alternative, safer lifting method can be adopted.

3.All operators required to lift and roll beams, where a decision needs to be made about the slinging technique, must hold a dogging certificate of competency.

4.The operator should be aware of the position of the shortening hooks if it is not possible to maintain sight of the hooks.

5.Have an observer present to watch the ends of extra long beams while the operator concentrates on the lifting gear.

6.Use spreader or lifting beams instead of shortening hooks if headroom problems exist.
