For eye splices, one stainless oval sleeve will hold full rated cable strength on 7 x 7 or 7 x 19 cable. On 1 x 19 we recommend using two stainless oval sleeves on each end to hold full rated strength . The copper sleeves hold almost at full cable strength; to be conservative estimate about 80%. Again, use 2 sleeves on 1 x 19 wire. Aluminum swage sleeves (It is also called aluminium ferrules) will only hold about one half the cable strength – Don’t use in the marine environment. Crimping of sleeve must be done with a oval swage sleeve tool or the “Swage-It” tool, to insure maximum holding power. We also carry stainless steel sleeves (stainless is not for hand swaging). The copper stop sleeves are for designed for the end of the wire rope (single wire inserted) and provide a stop when crimped on.

Chain slings are often used in situations of high temperature or under adverse conditions that would normally destroy or wear on one of the other types of slings. Chain lifting slings are strong, durable, flexible and can be collapsed for easy storage. However, the price for chain slings can be substantially higher than the other types. Due to market instability, chain slings are generally quoted on an as needed basis as the pricing can fluctuate periodically. Chain slings generally do not stretch at rated capacity, or very minimal to say the least, but do have the capability to stretch 15-20% prior to failure. This is an excellent warning characteristic to inform the operator that the sling is ready for repair or replacement.

Likewise, the pressures are absorbed in region of the lower sliding links. The leverages can amount to several thousand kpm. The sliding link ensures that the tensile and pressure forces are properly controlled.

Because the end of a wire rope cannot be easily connected to plant and equipment. There are different ways of securing the ends of wire ropes to prevent fraying. The most common and useful type of end fitting for a wire rope is to turn the end back to form a loop. The loose end is then fixed back on the wire rope. Then a wire rope thimble is used. When the wire rope is terminated with a loop, there is a risk that it will bend too tightly, especially when the loop is connected to a device that spreads the load over a relatively small area. A thimble can be installed inside the loop to preserve the natural shape of the loop, and protect the cable from pinching and abrading on the inside of the loop. The use of thimbles in loops is industry best practice. The thimble prevents the load from coming into direct contact with the wires.

The two layers of wire rope are placed in the u-bolt. The saddle is then fitted over the ropes on to the bolt (the saddle includes two holes to fit to the u-bolt). The nuts secure the arrangement in place. Three or more clamps are usually used to terminate a wire rope. There is an old adage which has over time become the rule; when installing the three clamps to secure the loop at the end of your wire rope make sure you do not “Saddle a Dead Horse!” The saddle portion of the clamp assembly is placed and tightened on the opposite side of the terminal end of the cable.

Wire rope consists of several strands laid (or ‘twisted’) together like a helix. Each strand is likewise made of metal wires laid together like a helix. Initially wrought iron wires were used, but today steel is the main material used for wire ropes. We can use chains or wire ropes when lifting serious loads, may be chains allow the correct flexibility, but wire rope can tolerate shock loads better than chains—that is because of the construction, material and specification of the wire rope.

First I’d like to introduce you the construction of the wire rope

The basic unit is the wire, which is formed into strands.

Various types of wire rope have been designed to meet a wide range of uses and operating conditions. These types are designated by the kind of core; the number of strands; the number, sizes and arrangement of the wires in each strand; and the way in which the wires and strands are wound, or laid, about each other. E.g. wire rope 6×19+fc, “6”means Number of strands that make up the rope, “9”means Number of wires that make up each strand, and “fc” means Fibre core(see picture below)

They are available in painted, galvanized or self-colored finishes and use quenched or tempered pins. Class 1 shackles pass a rounded pin through holes at the base of the shackle. A spring-actuated cotter pin or hair pin holds the butt end of the shackle in place. Class 2 shackles use screw-pins that pass through an opening on one only side of the shackle.
Selecting shackles requires an analysis of specifications and features. Dimensional specifications include: pin or bolt diameter, hole diameter, width at eyes, width at bow, width between eyes, inside length, inside width at bow, outside diameter (OD) of eye, approximate weight, and estimated weight per hundred. Some shackles use English measurements such as inches (in) or fraction of inches. Others are measured in metric units such as centimeters (cm) or millimeters (mm). Performance specifications for shackles include working load limit (WLL), the maximum laod which should ever be applied to the product under any condition, which is usually measured in tons. Toolee also supplies specialized shackles under any customized specifications or provide optional features. For example, stainless steel screw-pin anchor shackles provide improved corrosion and chemical resistance. Trawling shackles have heat-treated bodies and square headed pins that facilitate tightening and loosening. Web sling shackles may be hot-dip galvanized or zinc-plated, and provide an ultimate strength equal to four times the working load limit

Safety in cargo lashing is very imprtant.. only knowing the work load in cargo transportation, you can tighten the cargo properly with tightening fittings, and promise no lost,so an easy-to-use, secure tie down is needed. TOOLEE Ratchet tie down may have you the good effect. Ratchet straps assemblies are used to secure a load to a flatbed trailer, truck or moving van. TOOLEE has many different configurations available to tie-down most any load. Ratchet straps with flat hooks are the most common as they can be attached to the rub rail of the trailer (depending on DOT regulations). Ratchet straps with chain and grab hook ends allow attachment to in-floor chain tie-downs or can be wrapped around the trailer pocket or spool as long as the attachment point is rated for enough working load limit. Another option is the wire hook ends which offer another option for attachment to dee rings, tie-down plates, etc.

Roll-on/roll-off (RORO or ro-ro) ships are vessels designed to carry wheeled cargo such as automobiles, trucks, semi-trailer trucks, trailers or railroad cars that are driven on and off the ship on their own wheels. This is in contrast to lo-lo (lift on-lift off) vessels which use a crane to load and unload cargo.

RORO vessels have built-in ramps which allow the cargo to be efficiently “rolled on” and “rolled off” the vessel when in port. While smaller ferries that operate across rivers and other short distances still often have built-in ramps, the term RORO is generally reserved for larger ocean-going vessels. The ramps and doors may be stern-only, or bow and stern for quick loading.
